the lONELY gAME (of life)

chess board with a fallen king
we play the lonely game of life
of give and take and fear and strife
or is it just a game that’s playing us?
we fight and strain to get ahead
though knowing soon we’ll all be dead
it's all insane, why put up such a fuss?

the game of you and me and them
keeps playing till the lights go dim
all wondering if there’s hope within its rules
one just fell down, there goes another
a friend, a child, an erstwhile lover
this fucking game is playing us the fools

until the break goes deep enough
we’ll keep on playing, sweet and rough
still grabbing after each elusive toy
that never could relieve the pain
or staunch the blood that flows like rain
not leaving us the slightest glimpse of joy

but finally the light breaks through
destroys the shadows’ eerie hue
revealing that the nightmare wasn’t real
we find the garden of our youth
wrapped ‘round our minds as golden truth
’twas nothing more than lessons meant to heal
